Midnight Special (2016) Review

Directed by Jeff Nichols
Produced by Sarah Green and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones
Screenplay by Jeff Nichols
Starring Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Jaeden Lieberher

Okay, so maybe not the most exhilarating sci-fi movie there is involving a kid and a pursuit by the government or some other interested parties. If you’re going into this hoping for something in the vein of E.T.: The Extraterrestrial or Super 8 (and the trailers for this film do tease you in that direction), brace yourself for some mild disappointment. Sure, there are some interesting set pieces and amazing CG work, but filmgoers hankering for some action-heavy sci-fi may find off-putting the sluggish pace, the oft-somber mood, and the lack of resolution by the end.

If, however, you’re into heartfelt parental bonds, nuanced performances, mesmerizing cinematography, and beautifully composed shots, then Midnight Special will prove to be more than a delight. (I especially found myself gazing wide-eyed at a number of the establishing frames.) And you just might look past some of the cons I pointed out and find yourself reeled into the narrative.

Score: 7/10
