Deadpool 2 (2018) Review

Directed by David Leitch
Produced by Simon Kinberg, Ryan Reynolds, Lauren Shuler Donner
Screenplay by Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Ryan Reynolds
Starring Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, T. J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand

Deadpool 2 is more violent, more crass, infused with more heart, and just a little bit funnier than its predecessor (2016’s Deadpool). Ryan Reynolds in the titular role is as charming and funny as ever, especially as he continues to poke fun at his past superhero movie roles. New characters, such as Brolin’s Cable and Beetz’s Domino, meanwhile bring an added dimension that most other sequels falter in. The action scenes—a staple of comic-book movies and a standout element of this burgeoning franchise—are exhilaratingly shot, thanks in large part to new director David Leitch (John Wick and Atomic Blonde).

For the most casual of viewers, the fourth-wall breaks and meta jokes will prove refreshing and even hilarious, but the pop-culture quips might easily fly by. To comic-book geeks and film buffs, though, who’ve carefully followed the development of superhero films these past couple of years, the jokes left and right will make you laugh at practically every minute of the movie. And yes, it is true: the post-credits scene (well, it’s actually mid-credits) alone is worth the price of admission.

Score: 8/10
