Global Shapers Cebu Hub Gives Sugod Scholarships to Ten Social Enterprises

The Global Shapers Cebu Hub awarded ten local social enterprises with scholarships to eight of their SUGOD Sessions that will teach them how to transform their advocacies into a sustainable business for social good over the second quarter of this year.

With the heart to serve and the passion for advocacy, these ten scholars value various causes that can make a purposeful change in our community.

Miracle of Melchor (Danica Bellaflor)

Promoting health and wellness, the Miracle of Melchor is an innovative initiative that creates beverages from calabash fruit extracts for sale through their “Melch” products. They also advocate natural alternative medicine farming and provide livelihood opportunities to farmers.

ARCHon (Mary Catherine Codilla)

ARCHon (Animation, Role-Playing Games, Comics and Hobbies convention) is an event that supports creativity, expression, and innovation through hobbies. It aims to build the growing creative hobbyist industry in Visayas and Mindanao. It’s a convention for a cause that gives back to the community as they donate their event proceeds to their animal adoption care and child cancer support beneficiaries.

Bahandi (Caravelle Dagami)

What started out as a school project bloomed into something greater as this enterprise centralizes on the importance of how every plant is a treasure. They have trained their beneficiaries to shorten the gap between ornamental plants and clients through social media brand awareness and proper financial management.

Foundation for the Philippine Environment (Raymunda Debuayan)

This organization engages in collaborative partnerships that support and spark social change together.

With their “Conservation Trade-off” program, they provide livelihood programs to communities in exchange of them doing biodiversity conservation work.

Kadasig (Jude Gitamondoc)

From the roots of starting out as a crowdfunding campaign in 2016, this organization has lived on as a platform to empower and support Bisaya songwriting. It aims to build an environment for Bisaya songwriters to support themselves financially by sustaining their craft.

Coral Triangle Artisan Soap (Ma. Eloise Medici)

Coral Triangle is a homegrown brand centered to reduce solid waste from personal care plastic products.

Their artisan soaps and shampoo bars with environmentally safe packaging is key to being a modern eco-friendly solution.

Light of Hope Philippines (Jovie Gil Montajes)

This social enterprise has a central goal of lighting up 2.4 million households with limited and no power access in the Philippines by using solar renewable energy and recycling 4.8 Pet Plastic bottles. They aim to help save our environment and help light up hopes to off grid communities.

Making Memories with Dementia (Cynthia Reynes)

A self-initiated awareness campaign about Alzheimer's care started out as daughter’s heartwarming advocacy while being a primary caregiver to her 89 year old mother who was diagnosed with the Alzheimer’s disease ten years ago. This initiative aims to someday open a day care center in Cebu for Dementia and Alzheimer’s patients.

PUKAW (Jadyn Feliz Yap)

This social enterprise offers environmentally friendly, sustainable, and practical everyday products hand-crafted by the mothers of the children from the “Banawa Elementary School Malnourished Children Feeding Program.” They aim to awaken consumers to the reality of our environmental crises and enrich their dreams of a better cleaner, and greener world.

Green Releaf (Arthur Bagalacsa)

The Green Releaf initiative helps communities in emergencies and crises regenerate livelihood opportunities through a social enterprise app which help market their sustainably grown products. They have been working with their partner communities in Marawi after the Marawi siege and in Kalinga after Typhoons Lawin and Ompong.

These ten scholars will be equipped with the fundamentals of starting or sustaining a business with social impact all throughout the SUGOD Sessions program.

The program culminates with Sugod Expo, a free expo that will gather individuals, agencies,
organizations, and corporations who are involved in doing social good activities in Cebu. It will be from 10:00 AM - 10:00 PM on June 29 at the SM City Cebu Northwing Atrium.

SUGOD 2019 is supported by the Cebu Provincial Capitol, the Department of Trade and Industry 8, Cebu Landmasters, Inc., Angkas, Philippines, Gothong Southern Shipping, Unilever, Universal HRM, Steel Art Billboards, and The Company.
