Check in on Foursquare without a Mobile Device or Additional Plug-ins

What is Foursquare?

Foursquare is a location-based social network that lets people share information about different places they have been including, but not limited to restaurants, malls, coffee shops, parks, retail stores, and churches. To start using the service or share information, one has to "check in" from a location. Its most distinguishing feature (which is quite addicting) is the game-like system wherein friends compete for Mayorship for a specific location or establishment, earn points and badges for bragging sake. Foursquare allows you to check-in from GPS-capable mobile devices through it's free downloadable app available for various devices. While it has a desktop website, it does not allow you to check in and serves more as an administration tool for your account.

Is there a way to check in to Foursquare from my PC, laptop and other non-GPS capable devices?

You can check in through Foursquare's mobile site, however it requires a few extra steps. Go to https://foursquare.com/mobile/ and login with your Foursquare credentials. You will see a very simple mobile interface as shown below. Click on the “Check-in” link to be able to specify your location.

Check-in

Since this has no GPS capability, you need to manually search for your location. Type in your current location’s address or any identifying name and click the “check in” button to get a list of available places you can check in.

Click on the place you want. Next you will see options to post a shout out, share on Twitter and/or Facebook. Click on the “check in” button again and that’s it!

There’s a caveat, however to using this option, you will not be able to earn Mayorships (though you can still earn badges and points).
